Our Favorite Durable, Stylish Shower Curtain Rods (2024)

A shower curtain rod needs to match the style of your bathroom because it’s a highly visible part of the bathroom decor, but durability and reliability are also important. Tension rods are easy to install and work well with tub and shower enclosures, while mounted rods are more difficult to install but provide more stability and far more options.

We researched dozens of shower curtain rods, both tension and mounted, evaluating each for construction materials, durability, style, ease of installation, and other factors to identify the best options for every bathroom.

Our favorite shower curtain rods include tension rods for alcove bathtubs and showers, mounted rods for added stability, dual shower curtain rods for decorative curtains and hanging towels, and a range of oval, hoop, and L-shaped rods to accommodate different bathroom layouts.

What We Like

  • Easy installation

  • Rust resistant stainless steel

  • Holds heavy curtains and towels

  • Feels very sturdy

What We Don’t Like

  • Spring is difficult to compress

Whether you’re mid-remodel and looking for something to compliment your new bathroom, or you want to spruce up your existing decor, the Briofox Shower Curtain Rod has the look and the functionality to put it right at the top of our recommendations. This tension rod is easy to install, with no tools or cutting required, and it’s very sturdy once in place. The heavy duty stainless steel looks great too, or you can opt for one of several other finish options if that’s not the look you’re going for.

This is a straight shower curtain rod without a lot of embellishments, but we like the clean lines that terminate in oversized end caps. It’s a classic look that you can’t really go wrong with, and the large end caps provide a substantial grip.

The grip provided by the end caps, combined with the impressively strong spring, allows this curtain rod to hold up to 30 pounds. That’s the same capacity as the Moen Adjustable Double Curved Shower Curtain Rod (our best dual pick), a mounted rod that relies on screws instead of tension. We like that high capacity because it makes it less likely that the rod will pop out when pulling back the curtain, but it’s also useful if you want to hang a heavy curtain or drape wet towels to dry.

Installation is easy and straightforward. You won’t need any tools, but you may need someone to help you compress the spring. It’s so strong that getting it to compress far enough to install the rod can be difficult without assistance. That’s the reason it’s so sturdy though, so it’s a worthwhile tradeoff.

Type: Tension | Weight: 1.7 pounds | Maximum Weight: 30 pounds | Dimensions: 43 x 2.5 inches | Material: Stainless steel

What We Like

  • Lots of extra elbow room

  • Beautiful design and finish

  • Feels sturdy

What We Don’t Like

  • Difficult installation

  • Metal curtain hooks get caught

Curved shower rods have an elegant look that sets them apart from straight rods, but they’re also functional. We like this curved rod from Moen because it really opens up your shower or bathtub and provides a lot of extra room to move around, but it also looks great.

The brushed nickel finish and decorative end caps have a high end look and feel, but it’s also available in chrome and old world bronze if brushed nickel isn’t a match for your bathroom.

This rod feels very sturdy, but the weight capacity is only 10 pounds. That’s enough to hold a towel or two in addition to your shower curtain, but yanking too hard on the curtain can cause it to pop out of place. Some metal shower curtain hooks can get caught on the lip where the two parts of the rod come together, but large plastic shower curtain rings and decorative rings with roller balls are less likely to have that issue.

This is a tension rod, so installation doesn’t require any tools. It is more complicated than a typical tension rod installation though, and getting the decorative end pieces in place can be especially tricky. We recommend checking out a YouTube video if the instructions seem unclear, and having a second pair of hands to hold it in place when setting the tension comes in handy.

Type: Tension | Weight: 2.51 pounds | Maximum Weight: 10 pounds | Dimensions: 60 x 5.8 inches | Material: Metal

What We Like

  • Strong spring mechanism

  • Easy installation

  • Wide end caps

What We Don’t Like

  • Feels weak when fully extended

  • Metal curtain hooks scratch the finish

This shower tension rod from Vioremos has the look and performance of a more expensive product, which is why it’s our budget pick. The matte black (or white) finish brings a modern touch to your bathroom, and it’s very easy to install.

We like the exceptionally strong spring mechanism in this tension rod, which is capable of holding up to 22 pounds. For comparison, the Briofox Shower Curtain Rod (our best pick) has a capacity of 30 pounds and costs about three times more. We also like the end caps, which are wider and grippier than other options in this price range.

This rod does feel a little weak when fully extended, so we recommend measuring your shower or bath and then ordering one size larger than you think you need. Each of the three sizes collapses down to a minimum of 30 inches, with a number of short sections that you can add to achieve the desired length, so ordering a larger size just gives you additional sections and allows you to place more tension on the spring for a more solid fit.

Type: Tension | Weight: 1.1 pounds | Maximum Weight: 22 pounds | Dimensions: 52 x 1 inches| Material: Stainless steel

What We Like

  • Strong enough for two curtains and towels

  • Low maintenance aluminum construction

  • Curtain hooks included

What We Don’t Like

  • Decals difficult to remove

  • Screw tension can be tough to set

If you’re looking for the convenience and upscale look of a double tension rod without the trouble of a permanent installation, we recommend the Utopia Alley Double Tension Shower Curtain Rod. This double rod uses a screw tension mechanism that’s very strong, so you can hang wet towels, washcloths, swimwear, and other items to drip dry without the rod falling to the ground. It even comes with a set of shower curtain hooks if you’re replacing a single rod and don’t have any other hooks. We like that this tension rod is made from aluminum, which is rust resistant, low maintenance, and lightweight. It comes with some installation decals that are really tough to remove, but it looks great once you remove the decals and clean it up.This tension rod isn’t as strong as a mounted rod or some of our tension recommendations, like the Briofox Shower Curtain Rod (our best overall pick) that has a maximum weight of 30 pounds. The 10 pound limit of this shower curtain rod is high enough for daily use though, even if you have a decorative cloth shower curtain and hang several towels to dry each day.

Type: Tension | Weight: 2.1 pounds | Maximum Weight: 10 pounds | Dimensions: 62 x 27 inches | Material: Aluminum

What We Like

  • Attractive high end look

  • Lots of finish options

  • Provides extra shoulder room

What We Don’t Like

  • Two people needed for installation

  • Decorative trim pieces loose

This double curved shower curtain rod from Moen is ideal if you want to pair a waterproof liner with a decorative outer curtain without them clinging together, but it also works great for hanging towels, wash cloths, and other items to dry. It supports up to 30 pounds, so you don’t need to worry about your wet towels overloading it. The decorative trim pieces are loose, which we don’t like, but the rod itself feels solid.Since this is a curved double shower curtain rod, it provides a lot of extra shoulder room and makes your shower or bath feel a lot roomier. It’s available in a variety of finishes, including brushed nickel, polished nickel, and old world brass, but we like it in matte black for the sleek, modern look.Installation isn’t complicated (and the instructions include a handy stencil) but it does require two people due to the way the wall mounts work. The rods need to be held in place once one of the mounts has been installed, which is difficult to do by yourself while also installing the second mount, but it’s much easier if you have help.

Type: Mounted (wall) | Weight: 4.2 pounds | Maximum Weight: 30 pounds | Dimensions: 59 x 10.2 inches | Material: Metal

What We Like

  • Solid and sturdy

  • Heavy-duty 304 stainless steel

  • Adjustable without cutting

What We Don’t Like

  • Included adhesive doesn’t always work

  • May require ceiling support

This L-shaped shower curtain rod from Sikaiqi is the perfect alternative to a bulky, high maintenance shower enclosure. It’s adjustable to fit your shower without any complicated cutting, and it works with both square and rectangular shower pans.We like the natural look of the heavy-duty 304 stainless steel construction, which is both durable and attractive, but it’s also available with a gold finish. This shower curtain rod comes with all the necessary hardware, including adhesive for a no-drill install, and drywall anchors for a more secure installation that requires drilling. We recommend drilling if possible, but the glue works well if you have smooth, clean tile, and you either don’t want to drill, or you can’t due to rental restrictions.

Type: Mounted (wall) | Weight: 2.6 pounds | Maximum Weight: 30 pounds | Dimensions: 70 x 39.37 inches | Material: Stainless steel

What We Like

  • Attractive satin finish

  • Extra shower space in small bathrooms

  • Works well in RVs

What We Don’t Like

  • Curtain can catch on hinges

  • Maximum weight not specified

We like this expandable shower curtain rod from Stromberg Carlson for small bathrooms that don’t have room for a curved rod, especially for RV bathrooms with cramped quarters. The unique jointed design allows you to push the shower rod in for more space in the bathroom, and then pull it out for more shoulder room in the shower. The jointed look of this shower curtain rod takes some getting used to, but the satin finish looks great in most settings. The joints can also be an issue with some shower curtain hooks getting caught, but that isn’t an issue if you use large plastic shower curtain rings.Stromberg Carlson doesn’t provide a maximum weight that this shower curtain rod is capable of holding, but we’ve hung wet swimwear and towels from it in an RV installation without any issues—just make sure that it’s either mounted using drywall anchors or directly to wall studs.

Type: Mounted (wall) | Weight: 1 pound | Maximum Weight: Not provided | Dimensions: 28 x 3 x 5 inches | Material: Metal

What We Like

  • High-quality fit and finish

  • Durable 304 stainless steel

  • Shower curtain glides smoothly

What We Don’t Like

  • A little shaky with high ceilings

  • Two people required for installation

If a wall mounted rod isn’t an option, or you just prefer the clean look of a ceiling mount, we recommend the Naiture Stainless Steel Oval Shower Curtain Rod. This shower curtain rod is available in a wide variety of sizes to fit any clawfoot or freestanding tub, from 48 x 30 inches to 72 x 36 inches, and you can cut the individual sections with a stainless steel pipe cutter (which you’ll also need to adjust the length of the ceiling supports) to achieve a custom fit.

This shower curtain rod uses individual sections of stainless steel pipe (curved and straight) that you join together and then hang from the ceiling using the included hardware. We like it more than other options because the pipe sections come together with very clean lines, so there’s nothing for the shower curtain to catch on. It looks clean too, with a high end fit and finish.

Installation is fairly straightforward, but we do recommend having at least two people on hand to help hold the shower curtain rod in place. It comes with 36 inch ceiling supports, which you can cut down if your ceilings aren’t that high. It feels a little wobbly with the full 36 inch supports in place, but it doesn’t move too much as long as you don’t get too rough with the curtain.

Type: Mounted (ceiling) | Weight: 6.5 pounds | Maximum Weight: 30 pounds | Dimensions: ‎48 x 36 inches | Material: Stainless steel

What We Like

  • Classic design

  • Adjustable sizing

  • Spacious frame

What We Don’t Like

  • Included hardware is insufficient

  • Some installation difficulties

Finding a shower curtain rod that fits your antique clawfoot tub isn’t easy when ceiling heights, wall distances, and even the dimensions of the tub aren’t standard. That isn’t an issue with the Zenna Home Hoop Shaped Shower Curtain Rod, which can be adjusted for different ceiling heights and wall distances. You can even adjust the length if it’s too long for your tub (Zenna doesn’t officially support that adjustment, but it works.)

We love how spacious this curtain rod is, with a full wraparound design that closes you off completely from the outside world. Whether you’re installing it in an old farmhouse with an antique clawfoot tub, or in a modern bathroom with a brand new freestanding tub, the classic, utilitarian look works with just about any bathroom decor.

This shower rod does require some work to get it just right, so keep that in mind if you aren’t comfortable cutting an aluminum pipe. You may also need to take a trip to the hardware store for heavy duty snap toggle anchors if you aren’t able to mount directly to a stud, because the hardware that comes with this shower curtain rod isn’t strong enough for our taste.

We also recommend having at least two sets of hands available when you install this shower curtain rod due to the flexibility of the aluminum, which will tend to sag and twist while you’re screwing it in place if you don’t have someone to hold it.

Type: Mounted (ceiling/wall) | Weight: 1 pound | Maximum Weight: 25 pounds | Dimensions: 57.75 x 24 inches | Material: Aluminum

Final Verdict

The Briofox Shower Curtain Rod is our recommendation for the best overall shower curtain rod. It’s a tension rod with the weight capacity of a mounted shower curtain rod, along with a clean design, and durable stainless steel construction. For something that opens up your shower with some extra elbow room, and lets you use a separate liner and decorative curtain, we recommend the Moen Adjustable Double Curved Shower Curtain Rod (our best dual pick).

What to Look For in a Shower Curtain Rod

Size and Shape

When you start looking for a shower curtain rod, the size and shape of your shower or bathtub will determine the best size and shape for the curtain rod. Here are the types of shower curtain rods, where they’re useful, and how to measure for them.

  • Straight and curved: These shower curtain rods are for alcove shower stalls and bathtubs. To find a shower curtain rod that will fit, measure the opening of the alcove.
  • Hoop and oval shaped: These ceiling- and wall-mounted shower curtain rods work well for open showers and freestanding bathtubs. To find the right one, measure the perimeter of the shower pan or bathtub.
  • D-shaped: These are similar to hoop and oval shaped shower curtain rods, but you only measure three sides of the bathtub because one side is up against a wall. We don’t currently recommend any D-shaped shower curtain rods because we prefer the look of our hoop and oval shaped picks.
  • L-shaped: These shower curtain rods are for showers and bathtubs that are placed in the corner of the room. The length and width of the shower or bathtub (measuring from the walls) will determine the right fit.

Installation Type

Shower curtain rods can be installed in two ways: tension, or mounted using screws or other hardware. Shower tension rods are easier to install, but they usually aren’t as sturdy, and they can fall out of place if bumped. Mounted shower curtain rods are more difficult to install, but they’re typically sturdier.

While mounted shower curtain rods tend to be sturdier, that doesn’t mean every mounted rod is stronger than every tension rod. They’re sturdier because they’re screwed in place, but you need to look at the weight capacity of a shower rod to see how strong it is. The Briofox Shower Curtain Rod (our best overall pick) is a tension rod, but it’s capable of holding up to 30 pounds.

Some types of shower curtain rods can be installed using either method. For example, the Moen Adjustable Double Curved Shower Curtain Rod (our best dual pick) and Moen Adjustable Tension Single Curved Shower Curtain Rod (our best curved pick) are both curved shower curtain rods, but one is mounted and the other is a tension rod. Straight shower curtain rods are also available in both mounted and tension installation types.

Other types of shower curtain rods don’t have any models that use the tension installation option. Hoop, oval, L-, and D-shaped shower curtain rods all need to be mounted to a wall or ceiling because there aren’t any tension options available.

Material and Design

Shower curtain rod materials are important to consider, because some materials are more durable than others. You may also want to consider functional design options, such as a curved shower rod that pops out to provide more room in the shower like the Stromberg Carlson EXT-3542S (our best expandable pick), or a double shower curtain rod that makes it easier to use a shower curtain liner with a decorative curtain like the Moen Adjustable Double Curved Shower Curtain Rod (our best dual pick).

Here are the most common shower curtain rod materials:

  • Stainless steel: This is the most robust option, because it’s rust-resistant, durable, and looks good in its natural state and with a variety of finishes applied. The Briofox Shower Curtain Rod (our best overall pick) is made from stainless steel with zinc end caps.
  • Aluminum: Another good option, aluminum is lightweight and rust resistant, but it isn’t as strong as stainless steel. The Utopia Alley Double Tension Shower Curtain Rod and Hook Set (our best double tension pick) is made from aluminum.
  • Other metals: Some manufacturers don’t reveal what metal their shower curtains are made from. These shower rods are sometimes made of a steel alloy or nickel-plated steel, but they could also be aluminum or another metal. Some high end shower curtain rods are made from nickel, which is durable and rust-resistant but also expensive.
  • Plastic: This is the least expensive and least durable material option. We don’t recommend any plastic shower curtain rods because they’re prone to bending and breaking and don’t last as long as metal shower curtain rods.

Why Trust The Spruce?

Jeremy Laukkonen is an updates writer for The Spruce with over a decade of experience writing about home improvement, showers, and home goods. His own bathrooms use basic tension rods because he enjoys a simple product that just works, but he did use the Stromberg Carlson EXT-3542S expandable shower curtain rod in his previous motorhome and really enjoyed the extra elbow room.

For this story, Laukkonen researched shower curtain rods from all the top manufacturers, including both tension rods and mounted rods, evaluating each for durability, style, ease of installation, and other factors.
