A groundbreaking mental health facility, The Sett, has opened its doors in Northampton, offering a beacon of hope and support for young people facing mental health challenges. This "first-class" center is a game-changer, providing a specialized environment designed with the unique needs of youth in mind.
The Sett, an initiative of Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT), is now located within Berrywood Hospital in Duston. It boasts an array of amenities, including an activity room, cozy communal areas, classrooms, a dedicated therapy space, a kitchen, and outdoor areas, all tailored to create a comfortable and therapeutic atmosphere for its young residents.
Dr. Tiff Webster, the director of children and young people's services at NHFT, emphasized that The Sett "has been meticulously designed to cater to young people's needs, offering a holistic space for therapy, learning, and relaxation."
But here's where it gets interesting: The Sett's move to Berrywood Hospital has brought it closer to NHFT's other child and adolescent mental health service (CAMHS) unit, The Burrows. Together, these units now provide 20 beds, ensuring young people in need of inpatient care have access to a safe and supportive environment.
And this is the part most people miss: The Sett's design isn't just functional; it's an award-winning masterpiece. The center, a collaboration between Fleet Architects and T&B Contractors, has already earned three design prizes at the national Building Better Healthcare Awards, a testament to its innovative and youth-centric approach.
Marie James, NHFT's service manager for inpatient CAMHS, highlighted the importance of youth consultation in the design process. "The architects truly listened to the young people's desire for a space that didn't feel like a traditional hospital," she said. "The result is a bright, open, and vibrant environment that aligns perfectly with the young people's vision."
