Homemade Pea Salad- Just Like Mom Makes

This pea salad recipe is a recipe that my mom has always made at every holiday get together. It’s definitely a family favorite and I have been asking for the recipe for years.

She always tells me she doesn’t have a recipe she just makes it by taste.

On our way home from this past thanksgiving meal, I asked my hubby what his favorite dish served at the thanksgiving meal (excluding desserts) and he said, (to my surprise – I thought he would go for something “meatier”) “Your mom’s pea salad. It’s one of the best ones I’ve had.”

So this year at Christmas my mom and I got together and made the pea salad. I wrote down the exact amount needed for each ingredient. (Or at least the amounts according to our tastes, lol) and now I have the recipe to share!

Ingredients in Pea Salad?

  • Sweet peas
  • Boiled Eggs
  • Cheddar cheese
  • Dill relish
  • Mayo
  • salt and pepper to taste

Some people add in some onion, bacon, or other options, but that is entirely up to you.

How to Make Pea Salad

The one and basic direction? Chop everything up, mix it all together in a bowl. Seriously, that’s it!

HOWEVER, I do have one very, very, very important tip.

Whatever you do, make certain that you don’t skimp on the peas that you buy. You want peas that are good and ones that retain their shape and keep their outer layer on. Don’t get the mushy peas! Don’t!!!

Before diving right into the Pea Salad recipe, let’s clear up a few common questions that people always ask.

How Long Does Pea Salad Last in the Fridge?

If you keep it in a sealed container, I would say that it’s good to eat within the next 4 days.

Can You Make this Classic Pea Salad Ahead of Time?

Sure! If you can plan ahead and get it done, go for it! There’s nothing wrong with letting those flavors marinate together a bit before eating. But only make it one day ahead at the most.

What Entrees Pair Best with Pea Salad?

This is up to your taste buds of course, but in our house, we love it with ham, turkey, or roast chicken. The recipe is really versatile so it pairs nicely with almost any type of meat dish.

Can I Use Frozen Peas?

Of course! Just make sure they are thawed and drained before using. Frozen peas even have a prettier bright green color, so you might opt for that. We have always used canned peas, so I stuck with that. IMO frozen peas have a slightly different flavor than canned, – not bad, just different.
