But here's where it gets controversial... Despite not having lifted the World Series title since 2021, the Blitzboks are entering this tournament with an impressive track record. They've dominated the Dubai scene, claiming a record-breaking 11 titles, including six victories in the last seven events.
Under the guidance of head coach Philip Snyman, the team finished an impressive fourth last season, securing two titles along the way. Snyman, a former player with eight Dubai tournament appearances under his belt, is confident his men will deliver a memorable performance.
"We're taking all the confidence from our preparation and aiming for a strong start in Dubai. It's not just about that first game; we want to build momentum as the tournament progresses," Snyman said.
And this is the part most people miss... The Dubai Sevens is an intense mental challenge, and the competition is fiercer than ever. Snyman recognizes the significance of a victory here, especially with the Cape Town Sevens just around the corner.
"You have to be at the top of your game for every encounter. Our opposition is top-notch, and we know it won't be easy," he added.
The Blitzboks are an experienced squad, with 11 of the 13 players selected for the season-ending tournament in Los Angeles. They're the most experienced team in Dubai, boasting a combined 339 tournament caps.
"We're very confident in our preparation and training. But we know sevens can be brutal, and there are no easy competitions anymore," Snyman emphasized.
With a tough draw in Pool A, the Blitzboks will face reigning series champions Argentina, Fiji, and Olympic gold medalists France. It's a challenging group stage, but the team is ready to rise to the occasion.
Impi Visser, the newly appointed permanent captain, believes his team will carry pride and confidence onto the pitch.
"Every match is crucial, and we need to maintain our high standards from the get-go. There are added benefits to doing well in Dubai, too. We want to encourage more people to attend the Cape Town tournament next weekend and show their support," Visser said.
