A recent public consultation has revealed a lack of support for the Department of Education's (DE) proposal to scrap AS-Levels in Northern Ireland. The plan, which aimed to transform A-Levels into a two-year linear course without AS exams, faced strong opposition from almost two-thirds of respondents. This includes students, teachers, and parents who participated in the consultation. The DE has acknowledged the significant feedback and will further consider the proposal before making a final decision on the qualifications policy framework.

The consultation also highlighted concerns about over-testing, with Education Minister Paul Givan stating that pupils in Northern Ireland are currently 'over-tested'. This has led to the decision to reduce the number of topics studied at GCSE and A-Level and limit exams to two per subject. Sixth formers, such as Ailbhe and Jude, have expressed mixed opinions. Ailbhe, who studies A-Levels in French, Irish, and History, believes AS-Levels provide a good base for her A-Levels and help with university applications. Jude, taking A-Levels in Maths, History, and Irish, agrees that AS-Levels should remain, as they reduce pressure through modular courses. However, both acknowledge the potential issue of over-testing, with Ailbhe noting the confusion of studying multiple topics simultaneously and Jude mentioning the stress of multiple exams.

The consultation responses further emphasized the complexity of the issue, with a majority opposing the proposal to scrap AS-Levels and change GCSEs to linear courses. The DE has recognized the diverse range of views and will continue to reflect on and consider the proposal before finalizing the qualifications policy framework. The department aims to ensure high-quality CCEA qualifications that meet the needs of Northern Ireland pupils and adapt to the rapidly changing technological environment.
